Fifty-Two Days in Nehemiah (Day 37)

Day 37

You are the Lord, you alone. You have made the heaven, the heaven of the heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.
Nehemiah 9:6

From time to time we must return to the basics in order to move forward. If one goes to a professional baseball game, and arrives early, they will see the professionals going through the same drills that little leaguers do; fielding ground balls, throwing the ball, hitting the ball, and running the bases. In spite of their great skill and professionalism, they are not able to forego the basics.

The same is true in our lives. We must return to the basics from time to time. It is the basics that give all the rest perspective. If we forget the basics, then life is void of any foundation upon which we can build.

In Chapter 9 of Nehemiah, we see the people of Jerusalem turn to prayer and repentance. As they begin their prayer, they start with the basics. “God, you are the Lord. You made all that we see and even that we do not. God, you alone are worthy of worship.” These are not concepts that one needs a seminary education to understand; they are the basics.

Life can throw a number of things at us. Some of them are complex, some of them frustrating, and some of them will challenge us to our core. Where do we turn when we find ourselves in this place? We return to the basics. “God, you are Lord. You created all things. You are in charge of all things. I will worship you.”

It is this foundation that will bring clarity to the most confusing of all situations. This foundation will give us perspective when we feel there is none to be found. This foundation will allow us to move forward with confidence and as sense of purpose. If you find yourself in a difficult place today, return to the basics.
