Day 21
And I
sent messengers to them saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come
down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?”
Nehemiah
6:3
Keeping
one’s focus during distraction is never an easy thing. In fact, it seems that
the greater the task, the greater the distractions. If we desire to do something
great for the Kingdom of God, we must learn to manage distractions.
Additionally, we must learn to determine what is important and what is not
important.
Nehemiah
is nearing the end of construction the wall. He has overcome many distractions
and obstacles already. However, as the project nears completion, the opposition
is getting greater. Threats are being issued and demands are being made of his time.
In the midst of it all, Nehemiah amazingly demonstrates two characteristics
that will get him through: faith and focus.
First,
he demonstrates faith by the fact he will not be intimidated into doing what
others want him to do. Sanballat and Geshem are demanding that he come down and
meet with them. To pressure him they begin to spread rumors that he intends to
revolt against the king. However, Nehemiah knows these are just rumors and he
does not get caught up in the game. He simply trusts that God will let the
truth be known.
Second,
Nehemiah demonstrates focus. While there was plenty going on to distract him,
he remembers what he is called to do. He is called to build a wall and secure
the city of Jerusalem, the city that represents the glory and grandeur of God.
Remembering what he is called to do helps him to keep his focus. Knowing his
call allows him to have faith and focus.
When
serving the Lord, keep His calling on your life front and center. Being sure of
His call with help you have faith in seasons of uncertainty and focus in seasons
of distraction.
