Day 24
Now the
wall was finished…in fifty-two days. And when all our enemies heard of it, all
the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for
they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.
Nehemiah
6:15-16
The
ultimate goal, in any believer’s life, is to bring glory and honor to God. Though
it is incredibly difficult to keep in check, our goal is not to impress others
with what we can do, but to show what God can do through us. Our goal is not
for people to look at us and think how awesome we are, but what an awesome God
we serve.
Through
many hardships and trials, Nehemiah had completed the wall. Everyone knew
what he had accomplished was not possible unless God had moved on his behalf. Even those
who opposed him took note and knew that it had been, “accomplished with the
help of God.”
We,
like Nehemiah, should make it a priority for people to recognize the work of
God in our lives. Unfortunately, we to often get distracted by wanting others
to know how great we are. It is an impossible task to put, both, our greatness
and the greatness of God on display. We must choose.
In
the book of Galatians, Paul shares his attitude toward life and ministry. He
says, “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world” (6:14). Paul,
like Nehemiah, faced a tremendous amount of opposition. He, also like Nehemiah,
continued to rise above it all and accomplish great things for our God.
However, he had no interest in taking credit for what had been done. He wanted
God to receive all the glory.
Today,
as you live your life, make a choice: Are you living for God’s glory or your
own?
