Forty Days of Prayer for Our Country- Day 7

Scripture:
"The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."  James 5:16

Thought for the day:
" Don't just pray when you feel like it.  Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it.  A believer is powerful on his knees."  Corrie ten Boom

Prayer:
Holy God, on this day of worship, help me to truly speak with you and commune with you.  Help me not to get caught up in the belief that you only do things when "I feel it."  You are faithful to meet with your people and speak to your people.  Guide us into a faith that will enable us to stand...

Prayer Points for Today:
- Ask God to make His church powerful and effective in prayer for our nation.
- Pray that would help us to keep our appointment to pray during these 40 days

Challenge for the Week - Voter Registration
The last day to register to vote for the November 6 election is October 9.  If you need to register, check in the office to see if we still have some cards on hand.

Day 6

Forty Days of Prayer for Our Country- Day 6

Scripture:
Cleanse me...and I will be clean; wash me and I will be whiter than snow...Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.  Psalm 51:7,10
Thought for the day:
"Prayer will make a person cease from sin or sin will entice a person to cease from prayer."  John Bunyan

Have you become discouraged in prayer?  Do you wonder if this will really do any good?  Have you had the feeling that you are not worthy or strong enough in prayer for anything to come out of this?

Prayer:
Forgiving God, cleanse me and make me yours.  Help me to see the connection between having a pure heart and being able to persevere in prayer.  Give me a steadfast spirit so that I would not just pray for 40 Days but it would become a part of my life...

Prayer Points for Today:
- Pray that God would make His people clean so that we could be instruments of change in our country.
- Ask God to cleanse those in places of authority and leadership so that their lives may be an example to those they lead and that their sin would not grow into a scandal that would harm their families and their constituents.

The last day to register to vote for the November 6 election is October 9.  There is not much time left to register.  Do you know someone who may not be registered?  Call them today.

Day 5

Forty Days of Prayer for Our Country- Day 5

Scripture:
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,  filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.  Philippians 1:9-11

Thought for the day:
"Each time, before you intercede, be quiet first and worship God in his glory.  Think of what he can do and  how he delights to hear the prayers of his redeemed people.  Think of your place and privilege in Christ and expect great things!"  Andrew Murray

Prayer:
Father God, before I lift to you my requests, help me to be quiet and worship you for who you are - a God who delights to show mercy, a God who is glorious, a God who is worthy of my praise in this moment, a God who wants to fill your people with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.  As I worship you God, show me the depth of what these things mean...

Prayer Points for Today:
- Pray that you and all God's people would be have a love that would abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight.
- Pray that we, God's people may be able to discern what is best.  Lord teach us to pray for our country.
- Pray that in a sinful world, we may grow in purity until the day of Christ.

Challenge for the Week - Voter Registration
The last day to register to vote for the November 6 election is October 9.  Do you know someone who is eligible but might not be registered to vote?  A child who is at least 18 by election day?  A grandchild?  A student who is away at college?  A new neighbor?  Ask, encourage, and equip them.  We have a few voter registration cards in the church office.

There is less than a week to be registered to vote, now is the time to encourage those who might not be registered.

Day 4

Forty Days of Prayer for Our Country- Day 4

Scripture:
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. 
Ephesians 3:20-21

Thought for the day:
"Beware in your prayers, above everything else, of limiting God: not only by unbelief, but by thinking that you know what he can do.  Expect unexpected things 'above all that we ask or think.'"  Andrew Murray


Prayer:
Oh Lord I do believe but help my unbelief.  Deliver me from the fault of thinking that you can only do what I have seen you do before.  Help me in the middle of the great problems of the world and of my country to believe that you are still in control and that Jesus is and will be the answer to those problems.  In the darkness around me, help me to aways see the One who is the light of the world - Jesus.   Help me to believe he will do more than I can imagine.   Amen.

Prayer Points for Today:
- Pray that we would be people of faith in a world of doubt, that we would believe God for things unseen.
- Pray that we would hear the Word of God and the Spirit of God above the voices of the pundits and the commentators and even the candidates so that we would do His will.

Day 3

Forty Days of Prayer for Our Country- Day 3

Scripture:
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.  Romans 8:26

Thought for the day:
"The battle of prayer is against two things - wandering thoughts and lack of intimacy with God's character as revealed in his Word.  Neither can be cured at once, but both can be cured by discipline."  Oswald Chambers

Do you thoughts wander in prayer?  Do you ever have difficulty connecting with God in prayer?  If you are honest the answer is yes to both.  Pray today knowing that God's Holy Spirit wants to help you with both.  Go back to Romans 8:26, read it slowly knowing it was written with you in mind and let God lead you today.

Prayer:
Father, help me in my wandering thoughts in prayer to be drawn back to you.  Get me off of any "agenda" I have in prayer except for your agenda for me, for your church and  for my country.  Teach me to pray as your Spirit leads me over these 40 days...

Prayer Points for Today:
- Pray that we stay focused in prayer throughout this effort.
- Pray that we would sense and follow the Holy Spirit's guidance for each of us and not just read words on a screen.
- Pray that we would follow God's guidance in this process.

Day 2

Forty Days of Prayer for Our Country- Day 2

Scripture:
"This is the confidence we have in approaching God; that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask -  we know that we have what we asked of him."  1 John 5:14-15

Thought for the day:

"Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance but laying hold of his willingness."  Martin Luther

Can our small prayers here really make a difference in our country with all it's big problems?  Is this really doing any good? 

You may face those questions in this task of praying for our country, perhaps as a wondering thought in a time of prayer.  The time to answer those questions is now, in faith on the promise of God.  John wanted those few Christians of his day to know that they could impact the entire Roman empire because they petitioned not the thrown of Rome but the throne of heaven.  So do we.

Prayer Points for Today:
- Pray that we as a church and you as an individual, would grow in faith today and in the days to come.
- Pray that we would believe in the power of prayer before a willing God.
- Pray that we would overcome our doubts about our prayers and see their true power.
- Pray that each candidate may clearly and honestly share his positions on the issues in the upcoming Presidential debate
   and that voters would be able to discern what is being said.

Prayer,
Father God, help us to pray believing that you hear us and believing that you are a God who responds to the prayers of your people, no matter how great our problems maybe, they are not too great for you.

Day 1

Forty Days of Prayer for Our Country- Day 1

Thank you for joining me in this spiritual challenge of praying for our country.  I pray that you will be blessed as you read these daily posts and encouraged not only to pray for the things spoken of here but also for things that God may bring to your mind as you read.

Scripture:
"If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all."  Isaiah 7:9

Thought for the day:
In reading through the book of Isaiah, it hit me for the first time what dire straits Judah faced in chapter 7.  The Aramean army had come to Jerusalem to conquer it.  If that were not bad enough, they were joined by the northern tribes of Israel under King Pekah.  Brother had turned upon brother.  Hebrew had betrayed Hebrew and Israel had turned from her God.   Isaiah records that the hearts of the king and the people of Judah were "shaken as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind"(v.2).   Does that sound like our day?

 In all this conflict and betrayal, Jerusalem stood.  Isaiah was given a word to share - God would not allow Jerusalem to fall. But in that word of hope was a word of caution, "If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all"(v.9).  That sounds like a good word for us today in our "heart shaking" times.  Despite all that is wrong, there is a hope to stand if we stand as God calls us to stand.

Prayer Points for Today:
- Pray that we as a church, and Christians across our nation, would grow strong in our faith.
- Pray that we would believe in the power of prayer before a mighty God.
- Pray that we would stand together believing God can do a work in us and in our nation during these 40 Days
